AROUND half the population is expected to be involved in fitness and healthy lifestyle activities by 2010.

To attain this target, awareness campaigns, fitness education programmes and callisthenics at the workplace and in public parks will be implemented and 24,000 mass sports instructors will be recruited.

Fitness development programmes and outdoor activities targeted towards youths will also be introduced.

The corporate sector will be roped in to help sponsor the development of all sporting activities, including motor sports, water sports and aero sports.

Existing facilities will also be upgraded and 13 new multipurpose sports complexes, designed to provide badminton, sepak takraw and futsal facilities, will be built.

Under the Talent Development Programme, training centres and coaches will be increased and more overseas training stints provided in order to better prepare the 14,570 young athletes training in 37 sports events for top international championships.

More physical education teachers will be deployed in primary schools and gymnastics and athletics will be included in the education curriculum.

Two new sports schools will be built and more qualified coaches will be trained at certificate, diploma and degree levels.

Ex-athletes will be encouraged to train as coaches while universities and colleges will be urged to offer more places for students to enrol in sport science courses.

Emphasis will continue to be placed on preparing athletes for the 2007 SEA Games, 2008 Olympics and 2010 Asian Games.
