Malaysian to run show at Fifa World Cup Final

KUALA LUMPUR: The most anticipated football match of the year, Fifa World Cup Final, will not kick off unless the thumbs-up is given by one person, and he happens to be a Malaysian.

Fifa development officer Windsor John, who hails from Kedah, was recently appointed by Fifa to hold the position that will make him the envy of most football fans – general coordinator for the Berlin Olympic Stadium, the grand Final venue.

“A general coordinator is the man who runs the whole show. Matters pertaining to the teams, the broadcasters and the logistics are some of the responsibilities that I have to deal with,” said the excited 44-year-old, who is also one of the youngest general coordinators this time around.

“Even if the smallest things do not go as planned, the match cannot start,” he said.

ALL EXCITED: (From left) Abdulla, Rokk and John holding the Adidas Teamgeist football, which will be the official matchball for the World Cup in Germany, in Kuala Lumpur recently.
The real test for John will begin after he leads the teams onto the pitch and gives the referee the thumbs-up to start the match, as every coordinator's worst nightmare is to have spectators invading the pitch.

He is not the only one who will be doing Malaysia proud.

Seven other Malaysians have also been chosen by Fifa, a reflection of how highly regarded Malaysians are by the world's football governing body.

They are assistant communications director Lazarus Rokk, assistant referee instructor Abdulla Nazri, organising committee member Datuk Peter Velappan, medical committee member Dr Gurcharan Singh, general coordinator Datuk Paul Mony Samuel, security officer Indran Rasasingam and technical analyst Lim Kim Choon.

Rokk and Abdulla will also be playing prominent roles as the former will be heavily involved in handling journalists from all over the world while the latter will be involved in determining the performances of the referees during the competition through match analyses and evaluations.
