Old Klang Road hit by floods

KUALA LUMPUR: Rising flood waters sent hundreds of residents rushing out of their homes in Jalan Klang Lama and outlying areas here during an afternoon downpour.

This is the second time since April last year floods have occurred here.

In some places, especially along a stretch leading to Jalan Kuchai Lama, flood waters rose to as high as 1.52m, and in neighbouring Yee Seng Thambi Pillai Timur village, homes were also flooded.

The Jalan Klang Lama Pos Malaysia branch was also affected by the floods, which caused traffic congestion.

The downpour also caused a minor flood in front of the air force base along the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban highway.

Residents were seen scurrying out of their houses and trying to save their belongings. Some household items were seen floating in the murky waters.

Half of Yee Seng Thambi Pillai Timur village, which has about 1,000 residents, was in water.

“Those affected quickly moved their belongings to higher levels and evacuated their homes. A few senior citizens had to be transported out by firemen,” said village residents’ association chairman Tan Kim Pah.

Rescuers sent several elderly folks to hospital.

A woman, who was in confinement, rushed out from her home with her 10-day-old baby and her mother when flood waters flowed into their squatter home on the fringes of Jalan Klang Lama. The woman, who did not want to be identified, and her baby took refuge on higher ground.
