Wrong to legalise relationship based on sex

I REFER to your report, “Nik Aziz: Misyar okay” (The Star, May 27). According to Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, misyar is permissible because it is done with the consent of women.

Prof Datuk Dr Mahmud Zuhdi Abdul Majid of Universiti Malaya stated that misyar could be used to “overcome incidence of vice among Muslim women”.

Just because something is permissible does not mean it is beneficial. How can legalising a relationship that is based only on sex reduce vice?

The West is always criticised for its decadent moral values. Yet, here we are legalising those values.

Misyar is akin to one-night stands, where one can have sex without any strings attached. The meaning of sex as an expression of love is diminished.

Labelling that sort of relationship as a “marriage” makes a mockery of a real marriage – which is a relationship between two individuals based on love, trust and commitment.

Besides that, misyar insults the dignity of a man, whereby his role is akin to that of a male prostitute. Misyar reduces men and women to mere sexual objects.

How can that promote healthy marriages and families?

A loving marriage and family is the primary place for creating healthy, productive individuals, who are more than just sex objects.

If family life is to be improved here, we should not institutionalise such marriages.

Kuala Lumpur.
