UN: NAM faithful to its purpose
PUTRAJAYA: The United Nations paid tribute to the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), saying that despite changes in the world over the years, the movement has remained true to its purpose.
“Giving voice to the developing world, to advance a just and democratic international order, have always been NAM’s underlying goals,” said UN secretary-general Kofi Annan.
“You are also fighting poverty and under-development. You are concerned about the spread of infectious diseases and environmental degradation.
“You are committed to ending conflict and securing your independence as well as to checking the spread of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction,” Annan said in his speech delivered by his representative Vijay Nambiar at the NAM-Cob meeting here yesterday.
“I am grateful to your movement for the support it has consistently extended to the UN and to me as secretary-general.
“I also look to you as we continue to reform and reinvigorate our organisation to make it a more transparent, responsive and effective instrument of service to humankind,” Annan said.
