Make sure what you blog is accurate

PENANG: Whistleblowers who use camera phones, videos, SMS or blogs to disseminate information should claim ownership and be responsible for their accuracy.

Deputy Information Minister Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye said that while freedom of information was encouraged, there were laws to protect against misinformation being spread with malicious intent.

FOREIGN PERSPECTIVE: Radio Australia news and current affairs editor Deborah Steele interviewing Chia at the conference in Penang yesterday.
“Technology and media have changed but whether it is the blog or the Internet, there are laws to protect against invasion of privacy and slander,” he told newsmen after opening the 15th Asian Media Information and Communication Centre annual conference.

He said civil suits had been taken against bloggers or blog owners for disseminating inaccurate information.

“Recording is not an offence but what you record may be offensive if it is pornography,” he said.

“But if you are recording in a restricted area such as a police lock-up, you may be praised as a whistleblower but can be charged for trespassing.”

He cited an example of misinformation spread via SMS which said that Gerakan president Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik had died on Sunday.

The deceased was actually prominent businessman Tan Sri Lim Geok Chan.
