Panel to revise module

PUTRAJAYA: A special committee has been set up by the Higher Education Ministry to evaluate and filter through the draft module of the Ethnic Relations subject.

Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said he had also instructed Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to withdraw its teaching guidebook after being advised by the Cabinet.

“Following public interest that this module achieve its aim of bringing the races together, the revised draft will be presented to the Cabinet for approval before it is used in all institutions of higher education,” Mustapa said in a statement.

The committee, Jawatankuasa Penilai Pemurnian (Purification and Evaluation Committee), chaired by Datuk Prof Dr Shamsul Amri Baharuddin from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), had its first meeting at the ministry here yesterday.

Prof Dr Shamsul Amri was also a member of the panel of experts in the technical committee earlier. The committee members comprise Prof Dr Abdul Latif Samian also from UKM, as well as Assoc Prof Dr Siti Asiah Ali and Baterah Alias from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

Other recognised academics will also be asked to give their views on the Ethnic Relations module. They include Prof Emeritus Dr Khoo Kay Kim and Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr K.J. Ratnam from Universiti Malaya, Prof Datuk Dr Ramlah Adam from the Malacca Historical Museum, Prof Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Embong from UKM and Prof Dr Cheah Boon Kheng from Universiti Sains Malaysia.

On Tuesday, Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed announced in Parliament that the UPM module would not be withdrawn but said that all errors would be rectified.

He said the ministry was preparing standardised and detailed guidelines and a textbook entitled Basic Concept of Ethnic Relations.

On another matter, the ministry also announced that the new public university approved for Kelantan would be built on two sites in the state, with the main campus in Bachok and a branch campus in Jeli.

A temporary campus will be established at the Kota Baru Teacher Training Institute in Pengkalan Chepa.

The university will have its first intake of 500 students in July 2007, and a vice-chancellor will be appointed before September.

The university will focus on business, small industries, entrepreneurship and Islamic values.
