NSTP deputy chairman sues Dr M's former pol-sec for RM50m
KUALA LUMPUR: A RM50mil defamation suit was served on lawyer Matthias Chang Tuesday over statements he made during a press conference last month.
The suit was filed against Chang -- a former political secretary of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad -- by New Straits Times Press Berhad (NSTP) deputy chairman Datuk Kalimullah Hassan on Thursday (June 29) through the firm of Isharidah, Ho, Chong & Menon.
An interim injunction was also granted by a High Court here today to restrain the lawyer from further uttering or publishing those statements and from causing those statements to be published.
During the June 13 press conference, which was only attended by the Chinese and foreign press, Chang had challenged Kalimullah as well as the Prime Minister's son-in-law and Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin to openly debate controversial issues raised by Dr Mahathir.
He had also issued a dare for them to declare their assets. Chang has yet to file his defence to the suit.
