Students slam Israel
BANGI: Hundreds of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) students held a peaceful demonstration at its main campus in Bangi to protest against the Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
Led by UKM Undergraduates Association (PMUKM) president Mohd Anas Ali, the students, many holding placards to condemn the attacks, marched to the varsity’s administration block some 50m away.
Mohd Anas, who handed a three-page memorandum to UKM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Salleh Mohd Yasin, said: “We managed to gather about 5,000 signatures to protest against the aggression and these were put in the memorandum.”

Prof Mohd Salleh said the demonstration showed the undergraduates' awareness of international issues and their maturity in voicing their opinions.
In Penang, university students are urged to show their abhorrence of Israel’s aggression by sending essays to the local and foreign press.
Universiti Sains Malaysia vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said astute writing, rather than the use of weapons, was an intellect’s way of expressing objection to the war.
“It is not our style to take up guns and fight because if we do, we will be shot within two to three seconds as we do not know how (to use weapons),” he said at a gathering of some 1,000 students and university staff at USM’s Dewan Budaya yesterday.
“We work with our minds and intellect by writing analytical essays to help others understand the issue from the true perspective.”.
The gathering was held to protest against Israel’s attacks on Lebanon and Palestine.
USM Student Representative Council president Mohd Johari Awang Sazali later handed a memorandum to the Higher Education Minister’s special officer Ahmad Ikmal Ismail to voice their protest against Israeli aggression and cruelty.
