Interchange reopens

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM66mil interchange linking the new Sungai Buloh hospital to the North-South Expressway was opened to traffic yesterday.

Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said motorists from Sungai Buloh, Kepong and Batu Caves could use the interchange to get to the expressway.

Speaking to reporters after opening the interchange, he said the construction undertaken by Irama Duta Sdn Bhd was completed and handed over to the Malaysia Highway Authority and PLUS on Aug 15, a month ahead of schedule.

However, the cost went up from the original quote of RM52.9mil to RM66mil due to additional works, he added.

BETTER ACCESS: Sierramas Bridge, which was closed to traffic on May 27, has been repaired and was reopened to traffic on Thursday.
Samy Vellu said the interchange was located at Km454 of the North-South Expressway, near the Sungai Buloh rest area for truckers, and would link up with a four-lane road to the hospital.

He said that the Sierramas Bridge, which was closed to traffic on May 27, had been repaired and reopened to traffic.

“Work was undertaken to strengthen the bridge as well as to widen Sg Gasi from 4.0m to 22.0m to handle water flow from nearby development areas during heavy rain,” he said.

Samy Vellu said Health Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek and Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn, who are both residing in Sierramas, had asked for the early opening of the interchange as well as the bridge.

He said the Public Works Department was also expanding the Subang Airport road to the Sungai Buloh Hospital and Sungai Buloh road as part of the link to the interchange.

Samy Vellu said that phase one of the construction work on the Subang Airport road to Sungai Buloh was started in September 2003 and was 90% complete.

He said the Government had appointed Konsortium Melati Ehsan (M) Sdn Bhd and Desa Purnama Sdn Bhd to upgrade the Sungai Buloh road from Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP) to ease traffic congestion during peak times.

The upgrade would ensure a smooth flow of traffic for residents of Kg Desa Aman, Prima Damansara, Damansara Damai, Sierramas and Valencia.
