Successful politicians ‘serve with sincerity’
KUANTAN: Serving with sincerity and being close to the hearts of the people – that's the secret to being a successful politician, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
He said generally people, especially villagers, were not a demanding lot but would like their state assemblymen to be there for them.
“They do not want to be given lectures on economic theories or excuses for failing to turn up to meet them.
“Promises must be kept, and however tired we are, we must make sure a handshake and a smile is offered to the people,” he said.
“In my constituency of Pekan, even PAS members felt ashamed because I offered to help them during their difficult times. They told me they can’t join Umno but will give me their votes.
“To me, that’s good enough,” he said when opening the Paya Besar Umno division delegates’ meeting at the Kolej Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah (Kipsas) near here, yesterday.
Najib said he did not believe in helping only one race as Umno itself had the word “national” in it, which included protecting the interest of others.
He also urged the (Malay) community to be prepared to make a quantum leap in facing the competitive challenges ahead in the advent of globalisation.
“There should be a change in the mindset of the people in the country’s quest to be a developed nation,” he said, adding that a first class mentality would complement the infrastructure and economic opportunities provided by the Government.
