Mother and baby fighting for their lives following snatch theft

KUALA LUMPUR: A snatch theft victim and her nine-month-old daughter are fighting for their lives after a brutal attack near their home in Pandan Indah near here.

Purchasing officer Loo Jen Nie, 38, has been warded at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, while Ng Xia Yi, who was in her arms when the attack occurred, is believed to be in a coma at a hospital in Pandan Mewah.

Both mother and child suffered head injuries at the hands of their assailant, who was armed with a hard metal object when he pounced on them on Thursday evening.

The suspect sped off on a motorcycle with Loo's handbag when residents of the Sri Inai flats in Pandan Indah rushed out of their homes upon hearing the loud screams of Loo’s maid.

Ampang Jaya CID chief Deputy Supt Goh Lee Fook said the assailant was a dark-skinned man wearing a black jacket.

He was riding a sports motorcycle, which had a set of fake licence plates.

He said Loo, accompanied by the child and the maid, were returning home after visiting her parents in Jalan Klang Lama.

“Loo parked her car and was heading towards the letter boxes when the assailant pounced,” he said.

“Her terrified maid ran up to their first floor unit, screaming for help.”

DSP Goh regretted that the flats had no security. Furthermore, the lights around the place were not switched on at the time of the attack.

“Parking lots should be well lit to reduce the opportunity for such attacks,” he added.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Amer Awal said detectives in the district are on the lookout for the suspect.
