Firearms worth RM900,000 seized in raid
LUMUT: A police raid on a house here has led to the discovery of 58 state-of-the-art weapons from Germany and Austria worth almost RM900,000.
It is believed to be be the biggest firearms seizure in the country.
The 3am raid in Taman Venice on Friday netted five 5.56mm light machine guns, one 5.56mm automatic rifle and 47 self-loading 0.9mm pistols.
Most of the firearms were found stashed in boxes and bags in a room at the house while five pistols were later seized at an office at Persiaran Lumut Pantai Impian here.
Police arrested a 29-year-old arms dealer who was in the house during the raid.
Perak police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Aziz Bulat said that the suspect was a major shareholder in a company supplying arms to the police and the army.
"He had a licence to trade in firearms in 2003 but we suspended it on Dec 31, 2005," he told reporters at a press conference here Monday.
The suspension, he added, was because the man had failed to submit the annual report on the sale and ownership of the weapons to Bukit Aman.
He said the report was mandatory to indicate the movement of the weapons as the man was not supposed to store any.
"The case is under investigation. We believe that the weapons were sent by air into the country but we need to find out how they managed to clear customs," said DCP Aziz.
The man has been remanded until Jan 31 to assist in investigations.
