Scores pay last respects to Syed Hussein
KUALA LUMPUR: Scores of people paid their last respects to former Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Prof Syed Hussein Alatas, who died of a heart attack at 79 on Tuesday.
Among those who expressed their condolences to his widow and children yesterday were fellow academicians, politicians and a member of the Perak royalty.
They included former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali, Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, opposition leader Lim Kit Siang and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.
Deputy Information Minister Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, Institute of Islamic Understanding chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid and Singapore Senior Minister of State (Foreign Affairs) Zainul Abdin Rasheed were also at Prof Syed Hussein’s house in Damansara Heights here.
Prof Syed Hussein was buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery in the afternoon.
