Couple disowns debt-ridden daughter
JOHOR BARU: The parents of a 19-year-old girl have decided to disown her after being repeatedly harassed by loan sharks over their estranged daughters debts.
Factory technician Ooi Seong Chin, 48, and his wife had bail Meei Shuang out of trouble many times over the years.
In June, he even borrowed money from his employer in Singapore to repay S$6,500 (RM14,910) worth of loans and interests that his daughter had incurred.
The last straw came when she disappeared a month ago, leaving him to fend off the loan sharks by himself as the Ah Longs visited his family and sent a barrage of threatening SMSs demanding repayment.
According to him, two separate loan sharks have come to the house demanding S$3,500 each. Trash cans were also thrown into their house compound in Taman Selesa Jaya, Gelang Patah.
My wife and four other children are sometimes alone at home and I fear for their safety.
I want to disown Meei Shuang, our second child, as she has caused us endless trouble all our lives, he said at a press conference organised by Johor MCA public complaints bureau deputy chief Diong Ah Lek.
Oois wife Yeoh Sew Chin, 44, said that Meei Shuang had been a difficult child, stealing money from them from the time she was 10 years old.
Yeoh said that Meei Shuang had even tried to strangle her once when she refused to return her passport, birth certificate and IC.
She added that she was sometimes afraid to stay at home alone as she feared the loan sharks would get violent.
Diong urged the loan sharks not to penalise the family for debts incurred by the girl.
