Copperfield’s magic foiled by FBI probe

By JO TEH

KUALA LUMPUR: David Copperfield's “World of Wonder” show at Stadium Negara on Oct 30 and 31 has been cancelled.

Arianna Event Management director Arianna Teoh said the cancellation was due to the investigation by the FBI on the master illusionist.

“He needs to help in the investigations. Copperfield is not prevented from leaving the United States but he needs time to get to the bottom of things,” Teoh said.

She said to be fair to all Copperfield fans, the management decided to cancel the shows here and would give him a week's grace after the conclusion of the investigations.

The FBI raided Copperfield's warehouse and a theatre where he performs in Las Vegas following sexual misconduct accusations by an unidentified woman.

The agency would not disclose the nature of its investigation, saying only that federal agents had raided the warehouse as part of a criminal probe based in Seattle.

Published reports said the woman had accused the popular illusionist of sexual misconduct while both were in the Bahamas, and that agents had seized some US$2mil (RM6.7mil) and computer equipment.

Copperfield, 51, uses the warehouse as an office, for rehearsals and to store memorabilia and props and keeps an apartment on the second floor.

Teoh, who was disappointed with the whole episode, said: “To be able to promote his shows is something. Still, he is innocent until proven guilty.”

She said that since the alleged accusation came about, a chain of events had occurred, putting uncertainty to Copperfield’s Asian tour.

“His cargo has even arrived in Jakarta for shows there. They arrived on Friday so it is not like he was not coming.

“The people here and all his fans have been very supportive of him and if he is cleared (of the accusations), then it is possible that he will still continue with the shows.”

Ticket sales have been suspended since Saturday.

Full refunds will be made through ticketing agent Axcess Tickets once the final confirmation of the tour's cancellation is made this week.
