Schoolboy dies in scuffle

Wei Kuan: A post mortem will be conducted on him today.
BAGAN SERAI: A scuffle between two students of SMK Bagan Serai, believed to be over a stolen pen, ended with one of them getting killed.

Remove Class student Loh Wei Kuan, 13, was rushed to the Bagan Serai health clinic about 500m away from the school after the 12.35pm incident yesterday but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Kerian OCPD Supt Mat Fauzi Nayan said no external wounds were found on Wei Kuan except for a few bruises, adding that a post mortem would be conducted at the Parit Buntar Hospital today.

He said the scuffle occurred at a corridor of a classroom block.

“When Wei Kuan fell down, two of Wei Kuan’s friends carried him to the guard post before alerting teachers. Two teachers sent him in a car to the clinic,” Supt Mat Fauzi said during a dialogue session at the school to find out what happened.

He said police picked up a student, aged 14, from his house in Kampung Keramat here for questioning, adding that the case had been classified as murder.

Parents of the deceased and suspect, the police, school and education officials attended the session.

Supt Mat Fauzi said police believed the incident was not planned.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Noh Omar, who met Wei Kuan’s parents at the hospital, said initial investigations revealed that the two Remove Class students were believed to have been quarrelling over a stolen pen.

“I have ordered the state education department to conduct a thorough investigation,” he said.

Kerian district education officer Zahria Johar refuted claims that the school did not act fast enough to save Wei Kuan.

“It happened after school hours but the teachers responded quickly by taking him to the clinic,” she said.

Wei Kuan’s mother, Tan Goik Nai, 41, said her son usually helped out at their chicken rice stall in Taman Bagan Serai after school.
