EC puts things right
PUTRAJAYA: The “wholesale transfer” of voters from the Sungai Rapat constituency to Pasir Pinji in Ipoh is mainly to put right what was not done in the last general election.
Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman said certain polling stations and localities in the area were not placed correctly. “So the commission wants to correct it before the next general election,” he said, adding that it was a nationwide exercise as part of its plans to clean up the electoral roll.
He added that the commission had the legal powers to do the transfer of voters.
Abdul Rashid said this after a meeting yesterday with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and five others, including state assemblyman for Pasir Pinji, Menglembu (Perak) and Lobak (Negeri Sembilan).
Lim had said that 2,231 voters who were earlier registered under area Pengkalan Pegoh of the Sungai Rapat state constituency (Gopeng parliamentary constituency) were transferred to Pasir Pinji constituency of the Ipoh Timur parliament constituency.
The group also brought up other matters such as the increasing postal voters in some constituencies and questioned registered voters who were over 100 years old.
Abdul Rashid said his officers at the Putrajaya headquarters and in Perak had been told to investigate all matters that were brought up.
“I am also going to Ipoh to see these problems personally after the Hari Raya celebrations,” he said.
He also welcomed questions on those aged above 100 years in the electoral roll.
“We need help from all parties. The commission follows the National Registration Department data and will now check on the data whether those people are deceased,” said Abdul Rashid.
