Illegal gathering a pain for road-users

I BOUGHT four tickets for the Chicago musical on Saturday. Thanks to the security roadblocks set up by the police because of the demonstration, I could not reach the venue on time.

My family and I were stuck in a massive traffic jam. Needless to say, my children were disappointed about missing the show.

Like many ordinary people, I am not passionate about politics. Yes, the rising cost of living does bother me and so are many issues but at the end of the day, I am also appaled at the manner politicians keep claiming to represent me.

I was held up by the illegal gathering in Kuala Lumpur. For God’s sake, this is not Pakistan or Myanmar.

It was not a people’s protest as touted by the organisers. If it was planned to be, then the politicians hijacked it.

How can we compare Malaysia to Myanmar because the people there have been denied of proper elections?

The police, from the press reports, said there were around 4,000 protesters while the bloggers claimed it was around 40,000 but from what I saw, it was probably around 10,000.

It certainly fell short of the 100,000 touted by the opposition. I see no reason why government politicians should feel agitated or react to the gathering.

Secondly, I am amused by the claims that there have been unfair polls in Malaysia. If that were the case, Kelantan would not be in PAS control for so many terms.

Politicians like Lim Kit Siang and Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who claimed it was unfair, wouldn’t have got elected.

The gathering was organised because the elections is around the corner and the opposition wanted to ride on the anti-establishment sentiment of the urban voters.

The opposition has asked for the use of indelible ink to mark voters who have already cast their ballots which the Elections Commission has agreed to. I am amused because we now seem backward like some African countries.

As for the government, I hope some of its senior politicians would stop making silly statements. A few of our Members of Parliament have continuously made a fool of themselves.

Please be sensitive to the calls of the people on issues like cost of living and crime because they are very relevant.

We do not care for illegal gatherings because they cause hardship and losses to the people. As for the local press, I hope there would be fairer coverage to protect your credibility.

NOT EASILY SWAYED,
Kuala Lumpur.
