No more broom, it’s the boot instead

By CHARLES FERNANDEZ

KAJANG: The broom will go, to be replaced by the boot.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo will withdraw the controversial broom award for under-performing government agencies.

But he has threatened to sack those who fail to perform.

“From next year, department heads of local councils who do not perform will be taken to task. This includes sacking or offering them the Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS),” said Dr Khir.

He added that the state government would get tougher next year as it had implement 36 indicators to gauge individual performance.

Dr Khir spoke to the press after a surprise visit to the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) headquarters. He clearly did not like what he saw.

Most of the staff, especially those manning the service counters, were missing. Only two of the six counters had employees attending to the long queue of people.

“I am not happy with what I saw. There will be more surprise visits to local councils. Department heads must make sure they are on their toes always.

“I mean business. They have been given sufficient time and have repeatedly been advised to buck up. We have been doing this since 2004. We have been receiving numerous complaints from the public and this is a disgrace to the state government,” said Dr Khir.

He added that the local councils belonged to the people and the public deserved quality service.

On the broom award, Dr Khir said it had sent out a stern warning to department heads to clean up their act, although many quarters had objected and claimed he had gone overboard.

“I know there are a lot of unhappy people out there among the government servants. However, the private sector felt otherwise and pointed out it is the only way to go if we want improvement,” said Dr Khir

The mentri besar drew flak from certain quarters after he presented a “broom award” on Monday to the Hulu Selangor district council and the land office for not collecting assessment for 2006 above the stipulated 50% mark.
