NUJ president concerned over safety of journalists
KUALA LUMPUR: Those who invite the media to cover events must take responsibility for the safety and security of the journalists, National Union of Journalists president Norila Daud said.
She said the sponsor or host who invited the media to cover an event must also ensure they were not doing anything illegal that could risk the safety of the journalists.
Referring to the incident where a Guong Ming Daily photographer was allegedly assaulted in a scuffle between Umno and DAP members at a multi-purpose hall in Jalan Peel, Cheras, on Friday, she said that while it was unexpected, the host should have ensured the safety of the journalists.
It was reported that the photographer, Koh Chun Seng, had lodged a police report at the Taman Maluri police station over the incident.
Cheras Umno head chief Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshi said that it was an accident.
He said DAP Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai had come with a few journalists to the front of the Cheras Recreational Centre, which housed the Yayasan Pendidikan Cheras and Cheras Umno office.
Syed Ali, who is also the foundation chairman, said an Umno member came out to ask why they were taking pictures of the building.
He claimed Tan then provoked the Umno members, who became upset and asked everyone to leave.
It became tense and there was pushing and shoving. In the process, one of my people accidentally hit the photographer.
He added that two Umno members the one who hit the photographer and another who had asked the party to leave the property lodged a police report the same day.
We will leave it to the police to investigate the incident, he said.
