e-Tanah to be introduced throughout the peninsula

By V.P. SUJATA

PUTRAJAYA: The e-Tanah, an electronic land transaction system that promises a more modernised land office administration, will be introduced throughout Peninsular Malaysia.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the system that was first introduced in Penang last month had been proven effective and its usage would be expanded.

He said its nationwide implementation was part of the amendments proposed for the National Land Code 1965 that was approved by the Cabinet Committee of the National Land Council here.

"The pilot project in Penang, which promises to cut transaction time by half, is on schedule and is being implemented 92.14%," he told reporters after chairing the cabinet committee meeting on Tuesday.

Najib said the amendments would be tabled in the next Parliament session.

Another proposed amendment is to empower state authorities to appoint agents to collect land premiums that were currently done through representatives of post offices and banks, he said.

The amendments would also allow for the issuance of permanent titles without having to give temporary occupation licence, he said, adding that state authorities would also be allowed to approve application to partition land that was less than 0.4 hectares in size.

Najib said another amendment would be to increase fines from RM10,000 to RM50,000 and the jail term from one year to five years for illegal extraction and removal of sand.

The council had also agreed to amend the Small Estate (Distribution) Act 1955 to increase the value of small estate from RM600,000 to RM2mil.

"This will help in the smoother distribution of ancestral properties without having to go to court for a settlement," he said.
