Students and teachers learn to deal with floods
MUAR: With the threat of floods, a group of students and teachers have been taught how to identify hazards and find ways to reduce the risk of flooding in schools.
A pilot School Watching Workshop, organised jointly by Mercy Malaysia and the Education Ministry, was held at SMK (A) Maahad here on Nov 9 and 10 under the Safe School Programme.
Mercy Malaysia president Datuk Dr Jemilah Mahmood said the rationale behind the programme was to get students prepared and be able to respond to any disasters in their schools.
“Students spend a large part of their time at school. We decided to share our expertise in overseas disaster response,” she said in a statement.
Students and teachers from 34 secondary schools in the Muar district attended the session.
They learnt to identify and photograph potential hazards and create a map before coming up with solutions to the problems.
The students and teachers also came up with creative plays, poems and posters to promote disaster awareness. They even took part in a spontaneous fire drill.
The activities were observed by officers from the Education Ministry and Unicef.
“We hope that this pilot workshop in Muar will be the first of many similar workshops in the future,” said Dr Jemilah.
