Cops serve court order on rally organisers, warn public to stay away

By ANDREW SAGAYAM

KUALA LUMPUR: Police served a court order on five members of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) and its supporters restraining them from organising or participating in the planned rally in the city tomorrow.

The order against P. Uthayakumar, his brother Waythamoorthy, M. Manoharan, V.S. Ganapathi Rao, R. Kengadharan and any supporter of Hindraf was served on Uthayakumar at his house in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, at about 7am yesterday.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Ismail Omar told a press conference at the city police headquarters yesterday that Cheras police chief ACP Ahmad Amir Mohd Hashim obtained the order from the magistrate’s court on Thursday.

The police, who have not issued any permit for the rally, will also post copies of the court order in several locations in the city to notify the public to stay away from the gathering.

“Anyone who takes part in Sunday’s illegal gathering organised by Hindraf will be going against the law and face police arrest,” said Ismail.

“The round-the-clock roadblocks are conducted as a precautionary measure ahead of the gathering.

“We hope the public can understand why we are doing this.”

Ismail said several major roads leading into the city would be temporarily closed tomorrow.
