Raising HIV awareness among youth
KUALA LUMPUR: The Government, in the fight against HIV-AIDS, has given priority in raising awareness among youth.
Health ministry deputy director-general Datuk Dr Ramlee Rahmat said the environment in which young people lived profoundly influenced their lifestyle.
There are indications that there is a significant increase in the number of HIV infection through sexual activities over the last five years, he told reporters at the Unicef-Youth Forum held in conjunction with World AIDS Day, themed Leadership in the HIV and AIDS Fight.
He said if nothing was done from now until 2015, 300,000 more would die from AIDS in the country.
He said concerted efforts from various authorities, NGOs, associations and the private sector were needed to reduce AIDS fatalities.
He said there was a 31.9% increase in the number of HIV patients last year compared to 21.5% in 2003.
More than a hundred people from various youth bodies, universities and colleges took part in the one-day forum.
