Syndicates using foreign students as drug mules

DESPITE the death penalty for trafficking in drugs, the crime is still rampant, Tamil Nesan said in its editorial.

It quoted Narcotics Department director Commissioner Datuk Mohd Bakri Zininas as saying that smugglers were using foreign students to carry drugs into Malaysia.

He said police have found that syndicates from Nigeria and Iran actively used foreign students to smuggle drugs into the country. These couriers enter the country on student visas but fail to register at the colleges for their studies. Later, they were found selling drugs.

Meanwhile, the paper also reported that many Malaysian women, mostly university and college students, have been arrested in other countries for smuggling drugs.

During the past 11 months, about 32 Malaysian women in the 20- 40 age group have been arrested for their involvement.

Mohd Bakri said that many of the young women were tricked into becoming drug couriers with promises of good money and free overseas trips.

The paper said the police and immigration authorities must take stern action against foreign students found to have entered the country to deal in drugs.

In another report, Tamil Nesan said temple committees have been urged to ensure they had the necessary approvals before building a temple.

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said there were many temples built in the past without proper approvals, and MIC was doing its best to get approvals for them.
