Selangor waives schools' RM500K quit rent arrears
SHAH ALAM: Selangor has waived close to RM500,000 in quit rent arrears owed by vernacular schools.
The 105 Chinese and 97 Tamil schools need only pay a RM1 annual token as quit rent from next year, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo said Wednesday.
He said the move would ensure the schools would not be bogged down with fund-raising activities but concentrate on educating the children.
“With the arrears written off, the burden of the dues is no more on their shoulders, so there is no excuse for not ensuring better results,” Dr Khir said after chairing the state exco meeting.
“Given a choice, I would not impose even impose the RM1, but there are certain regulations to follow as school land are under the names of individuals.
“One main reason for the token payment is that the schools are non-profit establishments.”
Dr Khir advised schools which have not received their exemption forms to put in an application to the respective district land offices.
He said even Chinese private schools could apply for the exemption.
Education Ministry parliamentary secretary Datin Paduka P. Komala Devi welcomed the move, saying that a great financial burden had been removed from the schools.
United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) deputy chairman Chow Siew Hon also welcomed the move, noting that Chinese schools were part of the national education system.
“We also hope that other states will follow the example of Selangor and allow vernacular schools to enjoy the same privilege,” he added.
