Motion on Jelapang toll accident shot down
A MOTION to discuss Tuesdays Jelapang toll plaza accident involving an express bus was rejected by the House.
Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang (DAP - Ipoh Timur), who tabled the motion, said the accident, which claimed eight lives, warranted an urgent debate on public safety.
According to statistics released by traffic police, the number of road accidents has increased by 22%, from 279,711 in 2002 to 341,252 last year while the number of fatalities increased by 6.7%, from 5,891 in 2002 to 6,287 last year, Lim said.
Road accidents caused the country losses of between RM5.6bil and RM5.9bil annually.
We need to scrutinise the root cause of the high accident rate here and examine why various road-safety campaigns have not been able to reduce accidents, he said.
In rejecting the motion, Deputy Speaker Datuk Lim Si Cheng said while the matter was of public importance, it was not of an urgent nature as the Transport Ministry was taking steps to reduce the number of accidents in the country.
