Let go and move on

SUNDAY WITH T.SELVA

Holding on to the past makes the pain last longer and your life more miserable.

THIS is the best time of the year for us to drop the past and begin with a fresh start for 2008.

The New Year is one week away and it is vital that we prepare our resolutions and plans so that we are able to give ourselves a chance to move forward and not dwell in the past.

I write this week’s column following several queries from readers who spend most of their time worrying about what had happened rather than living in the present and preparing for the upcoming year.

We should register in our minds that our past is a memory and the future is our potential.

We cannot undo what has happened and we should prevent previous mistakes and unpleasant issues from replaying in our mind because it pushes us backward, makes us depressed, weak, hopeless and unhappy.

Some people are gloomy most of the time owing to accumulation of their past which is harmful to their health because it affects the individual’s peace of mind.

Facing fact helps us to maintain inner peace which is the core of happiness.

Children are the best examples of being liberated from the past and future.

I adore spending time with children because they are the excellent living beings of happiness.

They are full of cheer, love and energy because they are free from implications of what has already occurred.

Children are only keen on the present like what are they going to do now and what had happened seems meaningless.

One of the biggest challenges in the lives of many people is being unable to erase or let go of the bygone errors, which acts more current than their present, thus outshining their accomplishments.

Our unpleasant past retards our thinking power, makes us weary, drains our energy, suppresses our happiness and makes us dull and withdrawn.

It is important that we focus on our present and the goodness of our daily life because this naturally pushes the past out of our minds.

But when this happens, there is another category of people who start worrying about the future.

Their issues are ‘will our children do well in their studies, will they be successful, will I be able to support their education, will I be healthy, will I get promoted, will I get married’, and their fears go on and on.

Such qualms become more prevalent in some families whenever a new year begins because they are unsure of what lies ahead.

The sad side of such people is that they self-inflict their emotions with worries, concerns and negative thoughts of the future and postpone happiness, resulting in them being miserable most of the time.

Our life is not meant to be a suffering and we should not become a victim to our foul thoughts because we are all born with only near perfection and not total perfection.

There will always be mistakes, obstacles and bumps in life but one should view them as subtle messages from the universal forces to pick up the pieces and learn from the experiences.

Our problems will only resolve when we realise happiness in our present attitude and not on future condition.

Learn to live in the present and not to live in the time that is absent because it only causes tension when we think about the unknown.

The current time is the only opportunity for us to share our happiness and we must not waste it or rethink about yesterday and ponder about tomorrow.

Our future excites us with unsure hopes and endless uncertainties and there is no better time than now to be happy.

We should shut the doors of our past and free our mind from our indefinite future and concentrate on our current work efficiently.

One excellent declaration to make for the fresh year would be to exercise gentleness and positiveness because having such attitudes would make your mind happy even under challenging circumstances.

He or she who is adaptable to difficult situations will be able to view weakness as a learning process and ward off anger by being pleasant and gentle.

Do not hold on to your pain or hurt but let it go because hanging on to it makes the pain last longer thus causing greater damage to yourself.

T. Selva, The Star’s Sunday Metro Editor, believes in being one with the existence because all experiences come as part of life.

Tips on inner cleansing

> Find a quiet spot or sacred space in your house.

> Sit comfortably on the floor or chair facing east.

> Close your eyes and drop your shoulders and take a deep breath.

> Hold on to your breath for a few seconds.

> During this process gather all the impurities inside you and exhale forcefully.

> During your exhalation, imagine that all your negativeness and past is flushed out.

> Do the breathing out exercise several times until you get a feel of ease inside you.

> Next, inhale fresh air a few times and start a new life.

Exterior cleansing

Take some salt and rub your soles with it. Dispose of the salt. Next, take another scoop of salt and dissolve it in a pail of warm water. Bathe with the water. Do this once or twice a week. This process will reduce your tension and enhance your aura.
