Mosque for Chinese Muslims unnecessary, says Malacca CM

By LEE YUK PENG

MALACCA: Malacca Tionghua Muslim Association head Rizal Abdullah will be invited to join the state mosque committee, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

“I proposed to Rizal to join the state mosque committee instead of building a new mosque,” said Mohd Ali, who is also the Al-Azim Mosque committee chairman.

The Chief Minister noted that Muslims here could perform their prayers in any mosques in the state.

“All Malaysians understand Bahasa Malaysia and they should have no problem with sermons conducted in Bahasa Malaysia,” said Mohd Ali when asked to comment on the association’s intention to have a mosque run by Chinese Muslims for the 3,000-odd community here.

Speaking to reporters after chairing the state executive councillor meeting at Seri Negeri yesterday, Mohd Ali said 50% of the mosques in the state had Chinese influence, especially the design of the roof.

Rizal, a 51-year-old businessman in Bachang, said he would be delighted to join the mosque committee once he receives the invitation.

However, he explained that having a mosque run by a Chinese Muslim was to attract more Chinese to visit the mosque and correct their wrong perception.

“It is not to divide the society,” he said.
