Maxis joins fight against scams

PETALING JAYA: Major corporations have joined the police in the battle against commercial crime.
Besides banks, the latest company to issue warnings to customers about SMS scams is telecommunications giant Maxis Communications Bhd.
Maxis has been sending out SMS alerts since Monday to its seven million plus customers.
A company spokesman said the alerts were being sent in batches, with the entire customer database expected to be informed by next Monday.
“We are treating this as an urgent matter and are prioritising it. We are advising our customers to be aware of hoax SMS messages.
“These scams range from asking people to deposit money into certain bank accounts, to collecting prizes by calling certain numbers as well as the notorious Akademi Fantasia 4 (AF4) scam.
“There are many variations of these scams and we want the public to be on their guard against them,” she said.
She added that Maxis decided to send out the messages after being informed of the problem by the police.
Public Bank Bhd has also been attaching notes on their ATM machines warning customers against cheats and the AF4 scam in particular.
Commercial crime losses went up to RM833mil last year from RM799mil in 2005.
