Proposed timetable not fair on arts students
I REFER to the recent proposed timetable for the SPM examination sent by the Education Ministry to all secondary schools.
While I fully agreed with the shortening of the duration of the examination (from three to two weeks), I am totally shocked by the scheduling of the art subjects in the proposed timetable.
The time and date of the Perdagangan (Commerce) paper is the same as that for the Geografi (Geography) and Ekonomi Rumah Tangga (Home Economics).
Similarly the Pendidikan Seni Visual (Art) paper is held as the same time and date of Prinsip Perakaunan (Principles of Accounts) paper.
This means that art students taking Perdagangan cannot take Geografi and Ekonomi Rumah Tangga. Similarly art students taking Prinsip Perakaunan cannot take Pendidikan Seni Visual.
As a teacher who has taught Perdagangan dan Prinsip Perakaunan for more than 15 years, I believe the proposed timetable will do more harm than good to the arts students.
It is imperative that these art students be equipped with the minimum necessary skills to join the work force.
This won't be achieved with the proposed timetable for the SPM examination.
The problem can be solved by pairing the art subjects with the pure science subjects.
MARGINALISED ART STUDENTS,
Kluang.
