Malacca's revolving tower project begins at new site

By MARSHA TAN at the Malacca State Assembly

THE Malacca state government will build the city’s RM21mil revolving tower at its new site next to Taman Bunga Merdeka in Jalan Merdeka here and initial construction work has already started, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

The 110m-high tower was supposed to be built near the Parameswara Jetty, but was temporarily stopped when an ancient Portuguese wall was discovered on the site near the Stadhuys.

“The government has conducted a ground probing radar survey to make sure that there are no historical artefacts or construction under the new site.

“Research has showed that the only things found there are some pieces of porcelain, which is found in most places in Malacca,” Ali Rustam told Datuk Wira Amid Nordin (BN - Teluk Mas) at the assembly Tuesday.

He also told Goh Leong San (DAP - Bandar Hilir) that while research and studies had been conducted on the original site, there were no indications of any historical remains until digging works uncovered the ancient wall.

Mohd Ali said the government would continue to reconstruct part of the buried walls of the Foraleza D’Malacca, or A’Famosa Fortress with a RM12.8mil allocation from the Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry.

The ancient wall is believed to be the remnants of the Middelsburgh Bastion, a Dutch add-on to the original 16th century Portuguese fortress to defend the entry to the Malacca River.
