PM: There must be special reasons

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has not reversed its policy to stop issuing approved permits (APs) for tuned-up imported cars, said Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Asked about the recent issue of 3,000 APs for tuned-up imported cars, the Prime Minister said the decision made by the committee must have been for “special reasons.”

“When there is a certain need, the committee can decide on a change but only for special reasons. We do not want it to become a norm,” he said.

He said this yesterday after the launching ceremony of the Pantai Sentral Park Project in Pantai Dalam.

On Wednesday, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz said the special committee headed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had issued 3,000 new APs for tuned up cars to Wald.

The committee had taken over powers to issue APs from Miti last year when the issue became controversial after former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad questioned the numbers and alleged there were AP Kings who received a major chunk of the APs.

Following this, the Government decided to review the AP policy. Under the National Automotive Policy unveiled last March, the Government said APs would no longer be issued for the import of tuned up cars.
