Wesak Day to fall on Workers Day
PENANG: Workers Day and Wesak Day fall on the same day this year – the first time it has happened in many years.
Malaysian Buddhist Association national president Rev Jit Heng said Malaysian Buddhists would celebrate Wesak Day on May 1 following a resolution at the World Buddhist Conference held in Sri Lanka.
He said the resolution, passed in 1950, stated that Wesak Day would be celebrated in May of each year, on the first full moon.
This year, Wesak Day falls on the 15th day of the third month in the Chinese lunar calendar while in the past, it was usually celebrated on the 15th day of the fourth month. The difference this year is due to a leap month last year.
State Labour Director Abdul Rahim Md Said said when two public holidays fell on the same day, the following day would be a public holiday.
He said the practice would only apply to companies which recognised Wesak Day as a public holiday.
