Nominations for Ijok on April 19

PUTRAJAYA: The by-election for Ijok state seat in Selangor has been set for April 28 with nominations on April 19.

Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman, when announcing the dates here yesterday, hoped there would be no untoward incident during nomination, campaigning and polling day.

“I wish to remind the political parties, candidates, party workers and individuals to abide by the election rules and campaigning procedures which have been set,” he said.

The Ijok seat fell vacant after MIC’s Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, died while on a visit to India on April 4.

Abdul Rashid said that, as of April 4, Ijok recorded a total of 12,272 registered voters, including 39 postal ones.

He said the electorate comprised 51.04% Malays, 28.16% Indians, 20.59% Chinese and 0.21% others.

Abdul Rashid also announced that Kuala Selangor Municipal Council president Haris Kasim has been appointed as returning officer with council secretary Azahari Sairin and council administration officer Mohd Razali Abdul Mayas as his assistants.

“We have also said that an enforcement team, headed by the Kuala Selangor District Officer, would enforce the election rules and regulations during the nine days of campaigning,” he said.

The Batang Berjuntai Community Hall in Kuala Selangor would be the nomination and vote-tallying centre.

There would be nine polling stations and 28 streams for voters to cast their ballots.
