PM hopes there will be no sanctions against Sudan

NAIROBI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the the situation in Sudan was not as bad as what had been portrayed by the western media.

“I did not see it that way when I visited the place because I am told food supply was sufficient.

“But I did see their houses are in terrible condition," said Badawi to reporters who are accompanying him on his official visit here.

He also said he was told by Sudan president Omar Hassan Al-Bashir that the Government was taking remedial actions to improve the situation.

He hoped no sanction would be imposed against Sudan as it would only create more misery to the people.

“Sudan is not a rich country. They are beginning to benefit from oil and gas but it does not mean that they are already well to do.

The Prime Minister said although Sudan might continue to be pressured, it would not affect Petronas investment there.
