Blogger Ooi files new application to strike out suit
KUALA LUMPUR: Blogger Jeff Ooi has withdrawn an application to strike out a defamation suit by the New Straits Times (M) Bhd (NSTP) and three others.
Oois move yesterday was triggered by the fact that NSTP, its deputy chairman Datuk Kalimullah Hassan, group editor-in-chief Datuk Hishamuddin Aun and former group editor Brendan Pereira had amended their statement of claim recently.
The blogger, however, filed a fresh application yesterday to strike out the amended suit.
Ooi also applied to have his case heard jointly with that of another blogger, Ahirudin Attan.
He made the application on the grounds that there were similar legal issues and facts in the case brought by the plaintiffs, with the addition of chief executive officer Datuk Syed Faisal Syed A.R. Albar, against Ahirudin,
He said a joint hearing would save time and cost, and ensure that there were no conflicting judgments.
High Court judge Justice Abdul Malik Ishak set June 19 to hear the application to consolidate the cases.
Both the bloggers are being sued for defamation and malicious falsehood over what was published in their blogs.
The ex-parte injunction obtained by the plaintiffs against Ooi will be extended till June 19.
No injunction had been granted thus far against Ahirudin, who is better known as Rocky.
High Court judge Justice Hishamuddin Yunus has set June 28 to hear an application for inter-parte injunction order against Ahirudin, a former editor of The Malay Mail and Sunday Mail.
