Ruler stresses harmony after installed as Malaysia's 13th King

KUALA LUMPUR: The success of Malaysia’s development and its administration are a result of the people’s solidarity which has always been preserved and nurtured, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin said.

He said the racial, religious and cultural diversities of Malaysians were not an obstacle but were instead a unique feature in enhancing the country’s strengths.

“I admit it’s not easy for a multi-racial population to live in peace and harmony. Look around us, not many are successful, many have failed.

“We must maintain this precious unity to the best of our ability.

“To co-exist requires us to understand, respect and be tolerant with one another,” he said at his installation ceremony as the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara yesterday.

He said the rights of every Malaysian was enshrined in the Federal Constitution and hence, they should be given fair and equal opportunities.

“As a country which can be considered young, Malaysians have gone far in proving their capabilities in governing the nation.

“If we look around, many countries that gained independence earlier than us are still lagging behind in various aspects (of development). However, this is not an excuse for us to be boastful because we still have a long way to go,” His Majesty said.

In conveying his gratitude to the Prime Minister, Tuanku Mizan called on the Government to work harder and intensify efforts to make the Ninth Malaysia Plan a success besides helping to build a civil society and boost the country’s dignity.

“I follow the 9MP projects and programmes with great interest. I see that the programmes and initiatives are beginning to yield excellent results,” he said.

He also said that the corridor development concept initiated by the Government was a good idea in bringing development to the whole country and to be enjoyed by all Malaysians. – Bernama
