Khairy: Respect decision to allow MU game
PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin has urged Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Mohamed Hammam to respect the Governments decision to allow Manchester United to play in Malaysia on July 27.
I call on Hammam to do the honourable thing by acceding to Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Saids request to allow Manchester United to play in Malaysia.
No one is questioning AFCs legal right to prevent the Manchester United game from taking place. That has never been the issue, since it is clear that FAM entered into a contract with AFC as a host country of the Asian Cup.
The issue now is whether Hammam will accommodate the wish of the Government and the hopes of many Malaysian football fans who are asking AFC to show some flexibility to allow the MU game to proceed, he said in a statement.
It was reported yesterday that Hammam was maintaining his stand that the match be rescheduled to ensure that it did not coincide with the Asian Cup.
Khairy, who is president of UPB-MyTeam FC, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had also made his position clear on the issue by stating that the MU game was an important event in the Visit Malaysia 2007 calendar.
The issue is no longer the legality of the MU game. Rather it is now all about how reasonable AFC is towards Malaysias request for an important event in the Visit Malaysia Year calendar not to be cancelled at this late stage. I am confident that Hammam and AFC will do the honourable thing, he added.
