Ng: Time not right to hire Chinese maids

KUALA LUMPUR: The “little dragon ladies” from China are wrecking marriages by enticing husbands and affecting mainly rural wives who often suffer in silence, said Wanita MCA chief Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen.

“These women get abused if they go against their husband's wishes.

“In the end, they suffer silently for the sake of their children,” she told reporters yesterday after launching an autism seminar and workshop at Wisma MCA.

Dr Ng said she had received many calls from women who did not want maids to be hired from China.

“They (little dragon ladies) come to Malaysia and cause havoc to families by enticing the husbands.

“Tougher action should be taken against those who misuse their working permits, student or tourist visas by indulging in activities that are not part of their visas,” she said.

She said many might not consider the problem of “dragon ladies” as important, but to those affected by the women the problem was serious enough to warrant recourse.

“We are firm in our stand (against the hiring of domestic maids from China). It is not the time yet to open our doors to domestic maids from China.

“We are writing to Radzi (Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad) to express our stand and we believe the Government will take it into consideration,” she said.

Dr Ng said their stand did not indicate disrespect for women from China but rather as a precautionary measure until the problem of “dragon ladies” were solved.

“Only when a healthy situation develops, can we consider hiring them as maids,” she added.

In May, the minister said Malaysia was considering getting domestic maids from China and India to alleviate a shortage in supply from Indonesia and the Philippines.
