Splendid seafood spread

AMPANG: By NASA MARIA ENTABAN

NONG & JIMMY THAI SEAFOOD BBQ

Lot 27363, Jalan Cahaya 1,

Taman Cahaya,

Ampang, Selangor

IT’S tucked away in a corner surrounded by plants and shrubs, and the journey there may seem long and perilous to some, but a few bites into the array of great food makes it all worthwhile.

Atmosphere is that of your regular outdoor food stall, fumes from the grill wafting into the air, sending the hungry patron into fits of impatience but luckily, the good chefs are efficient, and food doesn’t take longer than 10 minutes to find its way to your table.

A seemingly doubtful fusion at Nong & Jimmy is chakoi and kaya. This should come first, as a sort of appetiser.

The combination is truly unusual but it isn’t a bad one – definitely worth a try.

Grilled cockles come next. For a party of four, a basketful should cost you RM5. Pry those shells open and dip the flesh into some spicy/sweet chilli mix.

One dish you can’t pass up is the steamed fish, and remember to lap up the soup that it comes ‘drowned’ in. If you didn’t like cili padi before, after this you’ll be a believer for sure.

The fried rice is recommended as well. Though it looks oily, it doesn’t leave that greasy after-taste in your mouth, and the abundance of prawns, eggs and other little titbits in the rice just add to the tastiness.

Interesting appetiser: It might seem like an unusual combo, but chakoi and kaya go together just fine.
A vegetable dish that goes well with all these dishes is the fried kailan. There’s something really flavoursome about this dish but you can’t put your finger on it.

The icing on the cake at Nong & Jimmy is the tom yam and the barbeque crab. It’s best to have the crab first so that the heavily flavoured tom yam doesn’t numb your taste buds.

For a group of four, a hearty meal will cost you around RM70, minus the crabs. Crabs are RM40 per kilo, so you have to be a crab lover to order this.

So how does one make their way to Nong & Jimmy? Go along Jalan Ampang and turn right at the traffic lights right after Ampang Point.

You’ll see a block of flats and the stall’s signage. There’s ample parking space right next door.
