Commercial breeding is opening Pandora’s Box

SAHABAT Alam Malaysia refers to an online report regarding the commercial breeding of wildlife initiated by the Wildlife and National Parks Department.

Sahabat Alam Malaysia finds the concept of breeding nine species of wildlife including porcupine, barking deer, pangolin and mouse deer involving selected farmers most repulsive.

On one hand, the Wildlife and National Parks Department is trying to protect the country's fast-dwindling wildlife but on the other hand it wants to breed these animals for commercial purposes. It must explain the conflicting interests.

By planning to go ahead with the breeding of wildlife species, the department is fighting a losing battle in protecting wildlife and preventing illegal trade. Breeders of protected species may also abuse their privilege.

The department – the very guardian of our wildlife – will be seen as betraying the trust of the public and NGOs if commercial breeding is encouraged.

S M MOHD IDRIS,

President,

Sahabat Alam Malaysia.
