Information sought on P. Ramlee’s patriotism

PENANG: Efforts are under way to compile information on the patriotic aspects of Malaysia’s film and entertainment legend Tan Sri P. Ramlee.

National Archives director-general Mohamed Zawawi Abdullah said this was done in conjunction with the country’s 50th Merdeka celebration.

He said the information would, among others, be gathered from a national-level forum on the legend to be held at Kompleks Pustaka Warisan Seni at Jalan P. Ramlee here next month.

“P. Ramlee is always known as an eminent artiste but we want to know more about his patriotic contributions,” he said, adding that artistes nationwide would be invited to attend the forum.

“It will also be interesting to know about P. Ramlee’s involvement in politics,” he said.

Mohamed Zawawi said the National Archives also planned to compile a book based on the information gathered on P. Ramlee.

He was speaking to reporters after attending special prayers for P. Ramlee at Kompleks Pustaka Warisan Seni yesterday.

Mohamed Zawawi said the National Archives also planned to help promote during the forum the book titled Bapaku P. Ramlee (P. Ramlee My Father), written by P. Ramlee’s son Nasir.

He said renovations on Pustaka P. Ramlee in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, would be completed in three months' time.

“We want to attract more people especially youngsters to visit the Pustaka and learn new things about P. Ramlee,” he added.
