Competing on an equal footing

THE Deputy Prime Minister's challenge to the Malay business community to strike it on their own and not depend on the 30% Bumiputra quota under the New Economic Policy (NEP) is timely. (The Star, July 16)

The bumiputra community has gained much under the NEP that was implemented by the late Tun Abdul Razak to restructure society and eliminate poverty among the various races in Malaysia from the early 70s.

In the global market that we live in where only the leanest and fittest can survive in the business world, bumiputra entrepreneurs’ needs to be business savvy and compete among the rest on equal footing.

Surely after nearly 37 years on NEP, the Malay community should stand on their own two feet and not depend on handouts from the government to survive in the business world.

HAMDAN IBRAHIM,
Kuala Lumpur.
