Confirmed: Indelible ink will be used in next election

PUTRAJAYA: Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman confirmed at a press conference Monday morning that indelible ink will be used in the next general election.

The EC proposed the measure in June, but it first met with a mixed reaction from certain political leaders and some religious scholars.

The latter were concerned about the make-up of the ink and whether it could contain chemicals considered non-kosher to Muslims.

However, on Aug 9 the National Fatwa Council, after receiving a lab report from the Chemistry Dept of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, declared it was safe to use.

Election officials would now swipe an indelible ink on thumbs of voters after they collect their ballot papers.

Once they come out of the polling station, they would not be able to vote again at another station.
