Decision on language soon

JOHOR BARU: The Education Ministry will decide by the end of the year whether to use English as the sole language for Mathematics and Science in the Primary School Achievement Test (UPSR).

It has decided to bring forward the deadline from next year following growing concerns from certain quarters.

Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said there had been calls to use two languages for the two subjects.

“They are concerned over the capabilities of students in Chinese schools to answer the exam papers in English.

“However, the problems do not only concern students in these schools as students in national schools are facing the same problem,” he said after launching the Cemerlang Bakti programme yesterday.

He was commenting on the MCA Youth proposal in the wing’s 44th assembly recently to use Chinese for the two subjects in the UPSR.

On the issue of the school milk programme, Hishammuddin said a decision to change to another scheme should not be made in a rush.

“The ministry is working closely with the Health Ministry as we do not have the expertise to decide on an alternative.

“If the items supplied are not helping our objective, then we must find other alternatives,” he said, adding that a committee on cleanliness, health and safety chaired by his deputy Datuk Hon Choon Kim had been given until early next year to review the case and present their findings.

He warned all food suppliers for schools that the ministry would appoint a central food supplier if they did not buck up.

The minister said they should be more responsible especially when RM1.3bil was being spent on food programmes in schools.
