All fired up over patriotism

MPs were all fired up on the subject of patriotism.

The shouting match started with Datuk Mohd Said Yusof (BN – Jasin) accusing the opposition MPs of not standing up when the backbenchers, led by Datuk Raja Ahmad Zainudin Raja Omar (BN – Larut), shouted “Merdeka” seven times.

Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang (DAP – Ipoh Timur) said it was out of order for one to shout “Merdeka” without prior notice.

He urged the backbenchers to withdraw the statements after Datuk Bung Moktar Radin asked the opposition MPs: “You all did not Merdeka?”

Shouts of pengkianat (traitors) were heard with the Speaker Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib trying his best to control the floor.

“It was a spontaneous act by the MPs to shout Merdeka and it did not mean that those who did not stand up were not patriotic,” said Ramli.

Lim then stood up and shouted “social contract” several times as some opposition MPs joined in by raising a copy of the Federal Constitution. Some held other books.

A shouting match then erupted.

Chong Eng (DAP – Bukit Mertajam) and Fong Po Kuan (DAP – Batu Gajah) urged Ramli to take action against Bung Moktar, whom they said had insulted Parliament many times.

Outside the House, Lim told reporters that the Opposition protested against the backbenchers' act.
