Police ready for polls

HUTAN MELINTANG: The police have taken the necessary steps to ensure security measures are in place for a smooth general election, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Musa Hassan said here.

He said police officers and personnel throughout the country have been trained on their role and responsibilities during the next election, which could be held any time between now and March 2009.

Leave for police officers and personnel would be frozen from the time Parliament and the state legislative assemblies are dissolved until after the election, he told reporters after attending a tahlil (prayer session) at the Al’Aula Mosque in Simpang Empat here last night.

Musa also said the police had asked the Government for more funds to beef up the force and build new stations in places where the population had increased.

In some of these places, the number of policemen was disproportionate to the population density, he said.

“Some areas with a high population density have only 12 policemen maintaining law and order.”

Musa said the new measures would be carried out in stages, adding that pilot projects had been implemented in Seri Aman and Nusa Jaya in Johor Baru.

He said the police also planned to make sergeants or inspectors serve as the force’s public relations officers in an effort to build rapport with local communities.

Such an approach would enable the people to volunteer information on crime to the police and discuss any security related problems they may face, he added. – Bernama
