KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians throughout the country turned up in the hundreds of thousands to watch the Merdeka parades in their respective states.
In PENANG, 140 contingents comprising 8,269 people took part in a parade at the Dataran Pemuda Merdeka in Butterworth.
More than 15,000 people turned up.
Japanese musician Kitaro and his family, who arrived on Thursday night for a holiday in Penang, also watched the Merdeka Eve celebrations last night and the parade this morning.
In IPOH, almost 10,000 people of various races and religions thronged the Ipoh Padang.
The Pos Malaysia contingent stole the show with its participants attired in the postal uniform of the 1950s, which included short pants, and pushing bicycles.
Another contingent, which raised eyebrows, was the Perak Water Board (LAP) team.
All 55 members were garbed from head to foot in futuristic superhero costumes designed in the colours of the Jalur Gemilang.
In SHAH ALAM, the celebrations were moderate but joyful at the Persiaran Bandaraya.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo took the salute at the march past of 109 contingents.
The people got to watch several assets of the armed forces, including two Condor amphibious armoured carriers, and assets of the police, including seven new Honda VFR800 patrol motorcycles, as well as a Forensic Unit van.
In SEREMBAN, more than 10,000 people turned up as early as 7am at the Seremban Municipal Council Padang.
Sixty-nine contingents from the public and private sector as well as schools and non-governmental organisations took part.
In KUANTAN, a declamation rendered by boy genius Adi Putra Abdul Ghani, eight, livened up the Pahang state-level celebrations and captivated the 10,000 people who had gathered at the Dataran Kuantan in Jalan Air Putih since 8am.
In JOHOR BARU, a total of 108 groups comprising more than 3,000 participants joined the National Day parade that started at about 7.55am.
